Establishment of Virtual Trainer Lab for improving
Minimal Invasive Surgery Skills is joint Pak-US collaboration.Surgical Unit-II,
Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi has established Virtual Trainer Lab for Improving
Minimal Invasive Surgery Skills at Surgical Unit-II, Holy Family Hospital,
Rawalpindi that will provide Simulator Training to help trainees acquire the
skills needed to perform complex minimally invasive surgical procedures prior
to practicing them on living patients. The Lab is equipped with state of the
art modern ProMis and LapSim Simulators, Simulab, ethicon and FLS Box Trainers,
Simulab Tower Trainers and Specific Task Trainers.
The main objectives of establishing Virtual Trainer Lab are to enhance current
MIS (Minimal Invasive Surgery) facilities in Holy Family Hospital Operating
Theatres and establish link between OR / LAB / VCU, set up Virtual Trainer
Lab at SU-II, Holy Family Hospital, to develop the Training Manual for Minimally
Invasive Training Workshop, to train Faculty & Surgical Residents of Rawalpindi
Medical College & Allied Hospitals in MIS and to use Telemedicine &
Telementoring for imparting this training.

Initially, MAS Faculty training workshop was conducted at
Virtual Trainer Lab 17th -21st November, 2008. Total 12 faculty members of
RMC & Allied hospital participated in the Workshop from department of
surgery. The main objective of the workshop were to present and discuss the
principles of education and evaluation pertinent to training residents in
laparoscopic surgery, present and discuss the principles of simulation and
the validation of training models, present and discuss the issues of multimedia
and other materials to be prepared for laparoscopic training, demonstrate
and prepare the trainees to perform the skills of the trainers, teach those
skills and evaluate those skills, present in the OR tactics for training in
the laparoscopic surgical field and share videos of laparoscopic procedures.
On 21st November, 2008 the Certificate distribution ceremony for MAS faculty
Training Workshop and formal inauguration of Virtual Trainer Lab was held.
There are approximately 120 residents in RMC & Allied Teaching Hospitals.
To utilize the Virtual Trainer Lab, 10 MAS Training Courses have been scheduled
for post graduate resident trainees of RMC & Allied Teaching Hospitals
Jan-Oct, 2009 each course will be participated by 12 post graduate resident
trainees and short courses for faculty members (Registrar, AP, Associate,
and Professor) of RMC & Allied Teaching Hospitals
